Pesticide-Free Protein - Why it Matters

Adequate protein intake is important for good health and muscle gain. Protein comes in many different forms and is included in many whole foods. Protein supplements are a great way to add more protein to your diet. However, no matter what protein source you choose, it is important to make sure you choose the cleanest and healthiest protein supplement you can find. Whey protein is a great protein source. Whey protein is absorbed better by the body than other proteins, and is available in powder and capsules. Making sure that the whey protein you choose is pesticide free is important since toxins ingested from pesticides can impair your body from burning fat and from building lean muscle.

Pesticides were created to be used as deadly killing poisons and have been purposefully applied to most of the food we buy in the grocery stores. Since pesticides are invisible to consumers, it is very difficult to know if you are choosing products that are truly pesticide free. If you want to be certain that the organic whey protein you buy is truly pesticide free, look for the brown and green circular label that reads "USDA Organic". You can usually find this label on packages, on product advertisements or on display cases. The U.S. Department of Agriculture National Organic Program certifies products according to a detailed set of manufacturing and handling standards. These standards include:

* Strict regulations against using pesticides and fertilizers
* Reducing water contamination
* Conserving water and energy
* Recycling waste
* Increasing biodiversity

In order to know if the protein you plan to purchase is free of pesticides, you will need to read the label. If the product displays the organic certification label, it is free of harmful pesticides. Labels can sometimes be confusing. Therefore, it is important to know what is meant by certain terms included on these labels. The USDA has approved the following four definitions for any product that displays the organic label.

* 100% Organic - These products are made from ingredients that are 100% organic.
* Organic - These products are made from ingredients that are at least 95% organic.
* Made with any organic ingredient - These products are made from at least 70% organic ingredients.
* Organic ingredients - These are products made with multi-ingredients that are at least 70% organic.

Some small businesses and farmers of small operations may decide to bypass the expensive process of becoming licensed to display the "USDA Organic" label on their products and simply use the term "pesticide free". Even though doing so is considered unregulated, it does mean that the product is free of synthetic herbicides, insecticides and fungicides.

If you are considering adding more protein to your diet, make sure you choose products that are free of harmful pesticides. Take the time to look at labels, and read the ingredients carefully. Make sure the product you buy includes the certified organic seal. If a product is truly organic, it will contain no harmful pesticides. Part of the definition of the term organic is "without pesticides". If you can see the organic certification label, you can be confident that the product you buy is pesticide free.
